Distractions. They happen to the best of us… including potential donors to your organization.
Supporters may start the donation process but encounter some form of friction that prevents them from crossing the finish line and completing their gift. Maybe they got sidetracked by a phone call or their next Zoom meeting, or maybe the timing just wasn’t right. Regardless of the reason – your team is leaving money on the table by not following up and giving a friendly nudge to cross the finish line.
So what can you do to turn potential donations into real, impactful results?

5 Strategies to Recover Abandoned Donations
Let’s cover some key strategies to recover abandoned donations.
1. Stop the donor in their tracks.
Introduce some friction when a donor clicks to exit their in-progress donation form. The Exit Intent Appeal prompts the donor to complete their gift before they close out. This appeal is an excellent opportunity to inspire the donor to give and/or create a sense of urgency.
Pro tip: Personalize the messaging used in your Exit Intent Appeal to connect specifically with your organization or campaign. You can even update the wording used for each button!
2. Remind the potential donor of their previous intention to give.
After a supporter has completely exited the donation form without donating, show a branded pop-up reminder with a clear call-to-action to donate. The potential donor will be reminded of their incomplete donation as they continue to browse your site, or the next time they visit.
Pro tip: Configure where the Abandoned Donation Reminder pop-up will appear on the donor’s browser window to ensure it integrates seamlessly into your webpage and doesn’t overlap with other page elements.
3. Make it easy to finish the donation.
Remove friction to complete a donation. The Abandoned Donation Reminder has a clear call-to-action that requires just a single click to return the donor right where they left off on their donation form.
Pro tip: Use a placeholder to pull the donor’s previously selected donation amount to maintain continuity and create a specific, personalize call-to-action.
4. Build trust with branded appeals.
Supporters need to feel certain that their donation is going to your trusted organization. The Exit Intent Appeal and Abandoned Donation Reminder are consistent with the brand colors and styling of your donation form so donors have a confident and cohesive experience every step of the way.
Pro tip: Tailor the donation experience in multiple languages by managing your Embedded Donation Form and Donation Recovery settings in English, Spanish, and French.
5. Track success and make updates on the fly.
Reliably track how the Exit Intent Appeal and Abandoned Donation Reminder influence the actions of your supporters with Google Tag Manager. Measure success and make changes to your appeals without any code changes necessary.
Pro tip: Download the DonorDrive Google Tag Manager Template to quickly and easily add tracking for Embedded Donation Forms.
