Fisher House Foundation provides "a home away from home" for military & veterans families while a loved one is in the hospital.
He told me about an opening at Fisher House Foundation that he’d heard about. After a couple of conversations, I sent my resumé over. And the rest is history.
When I’m not working, I still stream from time to time. I also really enjoy cooking and baking and am often reading about the different aspects of it to keep expanding what I can do.
- Tell us about Fisher House's mission and the Fisher House streaming initiative.
For over 30 years, Fisher House Foundation has provided “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. These homes offer free, temporary lodging to service members, veterans, and their families, allowing them to be close to their loved one during a medical crisis and focus on what’s important—the healing process. There are 91 Fisher Houses located in the US, Germany, and United Kingdom.
COVID showed how important it is to evolve fundraising efforts. There is a lot of good that can come from the streaming space. I’ve been involved in some of it and even I’ve been surprised by some of the things streamers have accomplished. Fisher House already has a great fundraising program, but I know how generous gamers can be, and we’re excited at the possibility of partnering with great streaming communities.
- How was charity streaming introduced to you and did you have to influence the culture at Fisher House to embrace it?
It was introduced to me because I was involved with it. I just jumped in and learned. It’s more accessible. For most people, it requires less planning than a traditional in-person event. And despite being a little intimidating to get into, it’s an easy way to give to causes that are important to you. I’ve learned a lot and I want to spread that knowledge to people.
When I started at Fisher House Foundation, they were already on board with charity streaming. While they may not understand it as well as I do, they do see the good it can do and they’ve been very supportive of what I want to do with the program.
- Do you have any advice for a nonprofit just starting out with charity streaming?
Don’t count out the micro-influencers. While they may not bring in thousands of dollars each, there are so many of them that even small amounts quickly add up.
Give it time. The streaming sphere is very much based around knowing names. If your organization is brand new in the space, you have to do the work to get your name out there and it can take some time.
- How has DonorDrive empowered Fisher House's streaming program?
It gives us the control we want and need. If something needs to be moved or the user can’t find what needs to be changed, we can go in and do it ourselves. It makes it so much faster than needing to submit a support ticket or asking someone to submit a support ticket for every little thing.
- Where can people go to learn more about Fisher House Foundation and sign up to fundraise?
You can learn more about Fisher House at fisherhouse.org. To sign up to fundraise, you can find us at connect.fisherhouse.org/event/streaming or in the DonorDrive Charity Fundraising Twitch extension and set it up there.
